Our guests on Christmas Day are from the Welwyn Hatfield District and come from such towns and villages as Potters Bar, Welham Green, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Welwyn and Woolmer Green. We normally cater for around 120 guests each Christmas and these guests are nominated by individuals, churches, Social Services, Scheme Managers etc. Catering for so many guests can be hard work, but through the years The Mixed Group has received many offers of help from people willing to give their valuable time on Christmas Eve to prepare the hall, and of course to serve the guests on Christmas Day.
The meal takes place at Douglas Tilbe House in Hall Grove. A dedicated group of drivers transport the guests to and from the hall, and we also have a group of voluntary musicians providing entertainment.
Without the support of these people, and without the generous donations of firms, organisations and individuals, we would be unable to continue, or our meals would be a low-key affair. To date, we have been able to give each guest a useful wrapped Christmas present due to the financial generosity of so many. The Group also runs fundraising events during the year, including dance and music events, a sponsored 10 mile cycle rally, family race nights, summer lunch, coffee mornings and raffles (see the Events page for further details).
Formal Aims and Objectives of The Mixed Group:
- To promote any charitable purposes for the benefit of the Welwyn Hatfield Community; to organise activities which specifically help to relieve loneliness, poverty, distress and sickness.
- To promote and organise co-operation in the achievement of the aims and objectives of the Mixed Group through the bringing together and encouragement of volunteers.
